How the customer pays for a solar system
When you install a solar system, you are entitled to create and claim Small Technology Certificates (STC’s). You will receive 1 STC for every Megawatt of energy your system is expected to produce over the next 13 years.
A 3.0 kW system (approx 10 to 12 panels) will produce around 62mW worth of electricity over a 13-year period, which means you are entitled to 53 STC’s. A 5kw system would therefore be entitled to 89 STC’s and so on.
It is common practice to assign the right to create the STC’s to the retailer, in this case Captain Green Solar, in exchange for a discount on the purchase price of the system. You are generally invoiced for the “Out for Pocket” expense. You then pay for a solar system through a combination of your own money and money generated from the Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) that are associated with the solar system of your choice.
